My Birthday, and 50 Years Ago Today

I'm proud to celebrate my birthday on the 50th Anniversary of John Glenn's historic flight into space. Few people today can be called real American heroes, but John Glenn certainly fits that title. WWII and Korean Veteran, first American to orbit the Earth, U.S. Senator, married for 69 years, and oldest person ever to go to space (he was 77 when he visited the space station in 1998).

Today has been a really good day. Because it was President's Day, I had the day off and was able to spend some time outside and some time with my family. Those are two of my favorite things in life to to do.

I plan to teach my girls about people like John Glen, and other American Heroes. We still need people to look up to today. Of all his accomplishments, his lasting marriage is to me one of his greatest. I wasn't there 50 years ago, so I'll say it now, "God Speed John Glenn!"

Ending 2011, Starting 2012

Well, the Christmas break is coming to an end. All in all, I think it was a good break. Not only did we have a great Christmas, but we spent some time with our friends from Texas Carry and Stephanie. I didn't get a picture of it, but we also took the girls out to Amy's parent's pond and Cassidy caught a big bass on Saturday. Then, we went to a wonderful New Year's Eve party on Saturday night. Amy snapped this picture of the girls earlier today! Good start to 2012!

First Snow

A few days ago we had our first snow. It wasn't much, and it didn't last long, but the kids got to play in it a little (and Amy, those are her bare feet in the snow, lol). I think we had a lot more snow last year---we built a snowman on Christmas last year. Maybe after the first of the year we will get a big snow. That would be nice, but to be honest, I think I'm ready for Spring to get here. Sometimes Amy and I dream of living close to the beach!

I posted a few new pictures in our Flickr account. This is a great program for showcasing pictures. Unfortunately, it only allows 200 images, so I can only add so many. I use this account mainly to show people what kind of pictures we can take in hopes of getting a few photo sessions. It's a hobby, and I consider myself a "hobby photographer." In other words, I don't charge the hundreds of dollars that the professional places do, but I'm not quite to their level yet either. Maybe someday. Anyway, HERE is the link to some pictures I took of the girls yesterday at the museum.

This year is going by so fast. It's been the most difficult year for me (Ryan) at school I have had since my first year of teaching. So, for that part, I'm thankful it is going by quickly, but the girls are growing up so very fast. Amy and I try our best to appreciate the moments we have with them. We are so blessed to have these three little ones.

HERE is a link to some pictures I took today of Chloe. I'm using a lens I borrowed from a friend at church. It is a 50mm f1.4 lens. It's probably the best lens I've used. That doesn't necessarily mean I can take good pictures with it, but for just messing with it I'm pretty happy with the way these turned out.

Oh Deer!

Well, I was told when we started going to Orchardville Church that we would be hitting deer. This is the second one we have hit since we started going there several years ago. I suppose it is a small price to pay for attending such a wonderful place. You don't expect to hit them coming home after Sunday morning service.

I've heard people say before that the ones you hit are "the ones you don't see." There is a lot of truth in that. So many times I've seen them standing in the road and I slammed on my breaks, or seen them alongside of the road and just knew they would run out in front of me. But today was just like last time. Out of no where it was just right there in front of me. After hitting it, I pulled over and really thought we might have to call a tow truck. The wheel well was rubbing the tire badly, but after about 10 minutes of prying I was able to get enough room for it. The radiator was leaking, but we made it home without the car overheating. What a deal! At least everyone was okay. I told my middle child, "Well, it could have been worse." With a confused look on her face, she asked, "Dad, how could it have been worse?" I quietly thought to myself..."It could have been the Jeep!"

How sad, I forgot to take a picture today. I didn't even remember to take one after the girls were in bed. So I thought I would share this video I took of Callie.

She was showing me a dance while we were at dance class. As soon as she started, she fell. She was not hurt. I have watched this video so many times. It makes me laugh every time I see it. You may need to watch it several times for the full effect, but it is so funny.

This is a view from the dining room looking into the kitchen. This was just a wall before, now we have a counter and can see all the way into the kitchen.
This counter was added new when we did our remodel. I love it, it gives us so much counter space.

March 2nd is Callie's birthday. She turned 5 years old. Chloe was born on February 29th, so she shares a birthday with Callie on the years there is not February 29th. She turned 3 years old. Today was the first time she went to Girls of Grace at church. She enjoyed herself. Ryan & I were able to go to the church service together. It was a good day for everyone.

Kitchen Remodel - May 26 Part 2

It has been a long time since we updated the progress on the kitchen. We have most of it done now, but I will show you the progress in the pictures over the next few days.

Here we have finished taking the old laundry/pantry out. The wall is gone. Already it has opened up the kitchen even more.

After finishing some of the demolition, it was nice to hang a few cabinets. Putting in a few cabinets really makes the kitchen look a lot better. I love the new cabinets.

We emptied the pantry closet. The girls were a big help.
It was finally time to start demolishing the wall. Cassidy and Callie wanted to get in on the action. They got to hit the wall with a hammer and try to get pieces of the drywall down.

I always thought knocking down a wall looked like fun when I saw it on tv. It was not as much fun as it looks. :)

On the first official day, we removed the cabinets above the stove and along the east wall.
We installed the corner cabinet and saw a glimpse of how the kitchen might look.

Chloe's First Haircut

Chloe is over 2 years old and has never had her hair cut. Last time I got my hair cut, I tried to have Chloe's cut, but she would not sit still. I decided to just trim it myself. Today, she was willing to sit on the stool and allow me to cut her hair.
Chloe is sitting still while I trim the back. I showed her the hair after I cut it off. She wasn't sure what to think about it. Doesn't she look pretty?

Our Sad Gingerbread House

Last year we bought a gingerbread house kit and made a house. I don't think we took pictures. It turned out pretty good. It didn't look as good as the picture on the box, but it never does. Well this year I (Amy) decided to make a gingerbread house with the girls (from a kit). Ryan made it look so easy last year. I glued the pieces together and we waited. It came apart. I glued it again and again, it kept coming apart. I decided to go ahead and let the girls decorate it. I thought it might stay together for a while.

As you can see, we took the picture and the house was starting to fall apart. You can see the icing dripping and the candies falling off. In the first picture, it doesn't look that bad, but in the second picture, you can see the other side of the roof has broken and is falling off. A few minutes after we took these pictures, it fell completely apart. It was fun and we laughed a lot. Maybe we will take a new approach next time.

The girls were still sleeping when Ryan left this morning, so we did not open presents that morning. The girls & I went shopping that afternoon and did not get home until late. So, no presents to open that night. They were asleep when we got home.

We are celebrating the 12 days leading up to Christmas this year. We giving the girls a small present each day. While they were all excited, Cassidy still had a question. She wanted to know if Christmas would be like it always was and if they would get stuff in their stockings and at least 3 presents. She is such a smart girl. She wanted to be sure that we would also have fun on Christmas. I told her of course Christmas would be the same, we would just get to open presents for 12 days before Christmas and she would probably get more than 3 presents. I think this satisfied her.

12 days before Christmas: Each girl got a jingle bell necklace, Cassidy got Christmas tights, and Callie got a Christmas tutu.

I asked Chloe the other day if she would like a Hershey Kiss. She reached her head up and gave me a kiss.

One day Callie told me she had an "eye flash" in her eye. I did not understand. Finally I got what she was saying. She had an eyelash in her eye.

Toys 'R Us

The girls & I went to Toys 'R Us on Saturday. It was Jeffery's (the giraffe) birthday. We were also celebrating Cassidy's birthday. We got to march in a parade through the store. Cassidy helped lead the parade since we were celebrating her birthday. The girls got crowns, coloring sheets, stickers, and Cassidy got a balloon. Of course I could not resist and I bought them toys. We had a great time.

This one was taken in the back yard. I was trying to get a picture with all 3 girls, but Chloe was not wanting her picture taken. I guess I will try again another day.

We have a new swing at our house, Walker's (the little boy I babysit) mom (Nena) brought it because Walker was not sleep well at my house. He sleeps much better with the swing. The first day we had it here, Chloe had to try it out. I don't think she liked it that much, but she wanted to get in because Walker was in the swing.

Callie was driving her Dora jeep around the yard. She was afraid to steer. She drove it in a straight line out to the fence. Ryan turned it around and on the way back, she was afraid she would run into the shed, so she pulled the jeep back. That is a pretty big task considering the back wheels don't roll very well. She was pretty tired after that.

Chloe just loves to open and empty the bottom drawer of the dresser. These are Callie's clothes, so Callie sometimes gets upset with her. These clothes get washed often, even when they are not dirty. My motto is "If in doubt, wash it!"

We had some friends over on Memorial Day. It rained. The boy who lives across the street was playing in the rain and in the stream of water that ran down the street. The girls loved watching him. Once he found he had an audience, he really entertained them. They laughed and laughed. I thought this picture was just so cute of my 3 girls and their friend looking out the window. We had a good time.

This morning I was cleaning up the kitchen and turned to see Chloe with an armful of dirty clothes from the bedroom. I quickly got her a basket to put them in. She did a great job. She even went back to get more. I didn't even ask her to get them. I guess she figured I was cleaning up and I would probably want to wash the clothes. She is such a good girl.

It is Mother's Day. Cassidy is a very thoughtful little girl. She has already made a couple of things at school for me. She wants to make some extra special things for her grandmothers. I try to encourage her to be creative. She loves crafts and giving to people. As a mother, I am proud to call her my daughter.

We went to a Mother's and Father's Day Program at Cassidy's school on Friday, May 8th. I took a couple of pictures of Cassidy and then a few of Callie. Unfortunately, the batteries in the camera died. She had a nice program. I really enjoyed it.

Callie and Chloe have matching nightgowns and wore them to bed tonight. I decided it would make for a good picture.
Then I got to thinking, Cassidy and Callie wore the same nightgowns 3 years ago. I decided I would post that picture also. They both have changed so much.
